This year’s annual FUNLight event was dedicated to rapidly expanding field of Quantum Communication. After the introduction to DTU-Lys student chapter, more than 50 bachelor and master students were listening to “What is fun about Quantum, Nano and Photonics” as presented by Assoc. Prof. Nika Akopian from the Nanophotonics Theory & Signal Processing group at DTU Fotonik. Using simple analogies he compared the classical and quantum phenomena, showing how deceptive and unintuitive the later can be. As a tool to give students a feel of what quantum optics is, a famous Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment was carried out in order to demonstrate the peculiarities in interference of photons and how to tell that two photons are indistinguishable. Despite of some technical difficulties, the setup was live streamed from the camera to the big screen in front of the audience, where students could have had a detailed look at the experiment. The demonstration triggered a great desire in numerous students for knowing more, as immediately after the presentation many of them rushed straight to the equipment, asking for the repetition of the demonstration and get the chance to ask further questions personally.
After the presentation, students were offered to have free pizza and drinks in the canteen, where many of them had a pleasant evening discussing further paradoxes of the quantum world.
