September 2016

Precision measurement from Einstein – and for Einstein.

September 28, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Byg 101 | Rum 1, DTU
Kgs Lyngby, 2800 Denmark

Speaker: Prof. David Shoemaker, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US Abstract: The US Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) recently made the first detections of gravitational waves from black holes. LIGO consists of two observatory sites, in Washington and Louisiana, USA, managed by the California and Massachusetts Institutes of Technology. The LIGO Laboratory has developed sensitive laser interferometers to detect the strain in space-time due to gravitational waves, predicted by Einstein as a consequence of general relativity. The instrument science behind the…

November 2016

DTU Lys Colloquia: Prof. Kyriacos Kalli

November 21, 2016 @ 9:15 am - 10:15 am
NTCH | B345C-R121C, DTU Nanotech
Kgs Lyngby, 2800 Denmark

Title: Femtosecond Laser Processing of Optical Fibres Speaker:  Kyriacos Kalli Associate Professor, Department Chair Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics CYPRUS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Abstract: Femtosecond (fs) lasers are well suited for high-resolution inscription and micromachining in transparent materials of all types. Silica and low loss polymer optical fibres can be readily modified using fs-laser, direct-write methods that offer great flexibility and are often simple and single-step processes. The short temporal duration of fs-laser pulses lead to intensity-dependent, non-linear…

December 2016

DTU-Lys Colloquia: Prof. Liu Liu

December 20, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Byg 340 | R 0.9E, DTU Fotonik
Kgs Lyngby, 2800 Denmark

Speaker: Prof. Liu Liu Title: Waveguide, multiplexer, and interface structures for mode division multiplexing on silicon As an independent multiplexing dimension, mode division multiplexing has drawn interests on optical interconnect based on silicon. It can help increasing the communication capacity by folders requiring no strict wavelength control as in conventional wavelength division multiplexing system. In this presentation, we will present our recent works on the bus waveguide, mode multiplexer, and fiber interface structures for mode division multiplexing on silicon. Densely packed…

September 2017

DTU-Lys Colloquia w. Prof. Colin McKinstrie

September 13, 2017 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Parametric devices for optical communication and quantum information science In this lecture, he will review briefly the history of optical communication systems. Subsequently, he will review the physics and performance characteristics of parametric devices, such as amplifiers, frequency convertors and phase conjugators, which are based on four-wave mixing in fibers. He will also describe some recent applications of these devices, such as tunable radiation generation, phase-sensitive amplification, buffering by frequency conversion and dispersion, and real-time sampling. Parametric devices can generate…

February 2018

FunLight 2018

February 21 @ 5:15 pm
340/Line of Light,

DTU-Lys hereby invites you to FunLight 2018 taking place on 21st of February in building 340 at DTU Fotonik ! This year we have with us Prof. Jesper Glückstad telling us about his pioneering work on "Light Robotics - a brand new interdisciplinary R&D area" - so you are in for a treat!   Abstract: Scientific disciplines constantly evolve and create new offspring or subdisciplines that combine the favorable characteristics from its forerunners. The merger of biology and photonics has…
